IV VIRTUAL VISIT TO THE ATLAS EXPERIMENT - LHC/CERN

 

In this virtual visit, researcher Denis Oliveira Damazio (Brookehaven National Laboratory - BNL/USA), together with professors Edmar Egidio de Souza and Eduardo Simas (DEEC-POLI/PPGEEC/UFBA), will present the constructive details of the experiment, its main operational and engineering challenges, directly from the ATLAS control room in Geneva, Switzerland. The visit is part of the UFBA collaboration with the CERN ATLAS Experiment, also supported by the CAPES-COFECUB project: SEMA-ML: Search for Dark Matter using Advanced Machine Learning Models, which integrates Brazilian and French Universities.

 

The ATLAS experiment (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) is the largest particle detector built for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), installed at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) on the border between Switzerland and France. The fundamental goal of ATLAS is to investigate elementary particles and the fundamental forces of nature, focusing on the Standard Model of particle physics and searching for new physical phenomena that extend it. The experiment is installed at one of the four points where beams of protons (or heavy ions) collide at the LHC, after being accelerated to nearly the speed of light. When the particles collide, countless new particles are generated and interact with the ATLAS electronic instrumentation systems, which were designed in layers to record as much information as possible about these new particles. A complex hardware and software system was developed for online filtering of particles of interest in order to archive only the information useful for physical analysis, reducing the initial data production rate from ~70 TB/s to a few GB/s.
