PPGEE will join the team of institutions participating in the ATLAS Experiment - CERN

ATLAS is a particle physics experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It was designed to exploit the full discovery potential of the LHC, expanding the frontiers of scientific knowledge. ATLAS exploration uses precision measurements to push the frontiers of knowledge, seeking answers to fundamental questions such as: What are the basic building blocks of matter? What are the fundamental forces of nature? What is dark matter made of?

ATLAS is the largest detector ever built for a particle collider: 46 meters long and 25 meters in diameter. Its construction surpassed the limits of existing technology. ATLAS was designed to record the LHC's high-energy particle collisions, which occur at a rate of more than a billion interactions per second at the center of the detector. More than 100 million sensitive electronic channels are used to record the particles produced by the collisions, which are then analyzed by teams of ATLAS scientists.

The ATLAS Collaboration is made up of professionals and students of different nationalities, who research in the areas of Physics and Engineering and who also provide technical support to the experiment. It is one of the largest collaborative efforts ever attempted in science, with more than 5500 participants and almost 3000 scientific authors. The success of ATLAS depends on close collaboration between research teams located at CERN and in member universities and laboratories around the world.

Last week, during the general meeting of the ATLAS Collaboration, the Federal University of Bahia was accepted as one of the institutions participating in the experiment. This achievement is the result of a long period of cooperation between researchers from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the UFBA Polytechnic School and the ATLAS-Brazil Cluster, made up of institutions such as UFRJ, USP, UFJF and UERJ. Since 2012, undergraduate engineering students, as well as master's and doctorate students, have been trained in the Postgraduate Program in Electrical Engineering, on topics related to ATLAS. Currently, the ATLAS working group at UFBA is coordinated by professors Eduardo Simas and Paulo Farias, and with the participation of Professors Antônio Fernandes Jr. and Wagner Oliveira.
